Overview

This course is designed to offer progression from the level 1 diploma in painting and decorating, the level 1 diploma in construction Skills or equivalent, and will allow students to practice and develop their skills further required for employment and/or a career as a painter and decorator in the construction sector. You must supply safety footwear/clothing and an identified tool kit. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are also necessary. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Details

Our level 2 technical certificate in Painting and Decorating covers all the main skills and knowledge required to further your learning and progress in this trade. You will study the following mandatory content: Access equipment Application of papers to walls and ceilings Application of surface coatings Preparation of surfaces for decoration Principles of construction Producing decorative colour effects As a practical course, you will learn in an environment with practical assessments, bespoke workshops, and complete theory in the classroom.

How will it be delivered?

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following City Guilds assessments: One externally set, externally moderated assignment (practical assessment) One externally set externally marked exam sat under examination conditions. There is also an employer involvement element to this qualification that is required in order to achieve the Technical Certificate.

Entry requirements

Direct entry to this course requires GCSEs in both English and maths at grade 3 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 3 or above, one of which must include a design or technical based subject. You will also need to provide one reference and it is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold a formal English and maths qualification at Level 2 minimum. Students previously studying with us will need to have attained either a Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills or similar, plus English and maths at grade 2 minimum or the equivalent Functional Skills. All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.

This qualification helps prepare you for work in the construction industry specialising in Painting and Decorating. Progression from the Level 2 course would generally be through entering the world of work via an apprenticeship programme or Full-Time employment in the Painting and Decorating sector.
