This course runs from September to June, for 16 hours a week, for one year at Abby Park Campus. It has been specifically designed to develop the knowledge and skills required for a career in the Motorsport industry. The units have been selected to develop students higher-level understanding of the world of Motorsport. It�s suitable for both school leavers as well as mature students that are not employed in the Motorsport industry but want the opportunity to develop occupational knowledge and skills. It will provide students with an understanding of the importance of health and safety and will cover all motorsport technologies at an advanced level. The course covers all main systems in depth with practical experience in maintaining them. Learning is set at an advanced level and you will be expected to carry out practical tasks to industry standards and be able to diagnose complex faults. On completion of the course, you will earn an IMI full MotorSport diploma at level 3. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled in a study programme, which will include tutorials, employability and be required to complete an extended work experience placement, a day a week for the year.


The level 3 Diploma in Motor Sport is a vocational subject-based learning programme covering all elements both the theory and practical aspects of the motorsport industry, this includes getting vehicles race ready, rules and regulations in motorsport, health and safety in motorsport, motorsport steering and suspension, brakes, engines and transmissions.

How will it be delivered?

The course is designed to give you hands-on practical experience on carrying out diagnostic and repair procedures and so is delivered and assessed practically in the most part with an element of written assessments to ensure systems theory is understood, coupled with online exams. Your tutor will provide explanations and demonstrations and guide you through practical activities. Practical assessments are based on observations of practical activities, while written assessments are based on completion of written assessments. On completion of the course, you will earn a full IMI level 3 Diploma in Motor Sport. You will complete a portfolio of evidence covering workshop tasks and related online exams and phase tests for each topic you study.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course requires: one reference, 90% attendance (desirable ), GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above, or both Functional Skills English and maths at level 2 (for 19+ students) and a Motorsport Diploma level 2 is essential, along with a positive attitude towards learning in the automotive industry.

The qualification offers you progression opportunities to study a degree in Motorsport at university. Also, all students are required to find work experience in the Motorsport industry, thus students are encouraged to apply for apprenticeships following successful completion of this course and their work experience.
