Overview

PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL FOR SEPTEMBER 2020 STARTS. The Vehicle Spray Painting Diploma level 2 is aimed at anyone looking to gain intermediate level spray painting knowledge and skills required for industry. It is designed to give you the confidence needed to be able to carry out spray painting of vehicles to industry standard. The course covers health and safety in the workplace, preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces, applying fillers or foundation materials to vehicles and repairing minor paint defects. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of policies and practices within the industry, providing all essential knowledge and skills for vehicle body paint operators. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include mandatory retaking GCSEs in English and Maths or undertaking Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above in English and Maths. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement of minimum 36 hours in a garage and an employability programme.

Leicester College has a very well-equipped modern vehicle paint workshop, offering advanced tools, equipment and paint techniques that enable students to gain a wide range of skills, essential for the workplace. This learning programme involves studying both the theory and practical aspects, preparing metal and pre-painted surfaces, preparing and applying fillers and foundation materials to vehicles and repairing minor paint defects. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

How will it be delivered?

The course is designed to give the students both theory and hands-on practical experience to carry out paint procedures and so is delivered and assessed practically in the paint shop, coupled with written assessments and online exams. Your tutors will provide theory explanations, practical demonstrations and guide you through all assessments both written and practical.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires both GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 3 (D) or above, plus two further GCSEs at grade 2 or above including a science or technical based subject. Alternatively you could have both Functional Skills English and maths at level 2, plus one suitable reference and it is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A suitable level 1 qualification or substantial paint refinishing experience is desirable but not essential. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications but can demonstrate experience in the industry.

This course is a stepping stone for students considering a career in the automotive paint industry. After completion, students are expected to progress onto a Paint Refinishing Apprenticeship dependent on meeting the entry requirements, with a view to starting work in the industry.
