This is a vocational qualification that will allow you to gain specific skills and knowledge relating to the field of sports coaching and sports development. This is an ideal course for you if you are looking to progress into employment or on to higher education, as it contains relevant units to expand your pathway. You also will be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme as part of the course offer.
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven�t already achieved a grade 4/C or above.
The qualification includes units in careers in the active leisure industry, developing coaching skills and well-being and sport. These are the mandatory units and are assessed internally by your tutors. In addition, you will gain an understanding of sport development, anatomy and physiology and self-employment in sport and physical activity.
This one-year programme is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels, the focus of this course is to prepare you to move on to the Extended Diploma where successful completion will be the equivalent to three A-levels and will accumulate UCAS points, accepted by university.
How will it be delivered?
This course is assessed internally through ongoing tasks such as a portfolio of evidence, presentations, practical demonstrations, and coursework. Assessment design is reflective of industry requirements.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 95% attendance. A GCSE in English grade 4 (C) or above is required, along with another four GCSE subjects at grade 4 (C) or above. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications. Progression will also be offered to students holding a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate or equivalent in a relevant subject.
Your next steps...
Students can progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development following the successful completion of this course. In the second year, the focus is to develop skills as a sports coach and complete units in rules, regulations and officiating in sport, sports psychology, fitness testing and training. Progression routes include higher education, sports coaching employment or sports coaching and development related apprenticeships for those over the age of 19 years.
