This course focuses on enhancing the learner's knowledge of the sport and active leisure industry. It is aimed at those wishing to work in the leisure industry and/or sports coaching. The course will help learners to gain the knowledge and skills required to either progress onto the next level or seek employment/apprenticeship. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.


This programme has a variety of units to challenge the learner in all aspects of the sport and active leisure industry. Units include: taking part in sport; planning own fitness programme; sport project and physical activities for children. You will also be required to study Functional Skills in English and maths.

How will it be delivered?

All units on this course are assessed solely through ongoing coursework. This could involve written essays, presentations, verbal interview or practical assessment.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F/G) or above is required, or ESOL entry 3. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

This course is excellent preparation for learners who wish to progress on to a level 2 diploma in health, fitness and exercise instruction or the level 2 BTEC diploma in sport. Which allows learners to choose a fitness instructing or sport pathway. Previous learners have gained employment in the leisure industry, usually as a consequence of a successful work placement experience.
