This course is a one-year programme aimed at young people considering a career in the uniformed public services, e.g. the emergency services such as the fire, police and ambulance services, or services such as the Royal Air Force, Army or the Royal Navy. The course will help you decide if this is the right field for you.
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
The course consists of a variety of units designed to enhance personal skills and knowledge. Within this are 12 vocational units, Functional Skills, tutorials and personal and professional development. The vocational units may include: conduct at work; wellbeing and fitness for the public services; a public service group project; public service careers; improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public service; personal skills for the public services; practical teamwork in the public service; map reading using ordnance survey maps; planning and participating in an event; introduction to expedition skills; and working as a volunteer.
How will it be delivered?
All units are assessed through ongoing coursework. This could be by written essay, presentation, verbal interview or practical assessment.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F/G) or above is required, or ESOL entry 3.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
Your next steps...
After completion of the courses you can progress on to further vocational courses such as the level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Uniformed Public Services or another subject. It will also develop skills to enable you to apply for any of the public services, or to transfer skills learnt into any other type of career.
