At the beginning of the course you will complete a diagnostic assessment to identify your starting point level and areas of Maths you find difficult with to enable you to make progress. The Maths delivery is contextualised and linked to the main subject short course you are completing. This course is designed to use Maths in real life contexts. Emphasis is placed on practical activities that reflect real life scenarios that a person may encounter and be required to solve using logic and problem solving, e.g. planning a holiday/day trip, calculating how to split the cost of a journey/holiday, finding the best deal when purchasing items, finding the best paid job, etc. Students will be taught how to adapt to unfamiliar scenarios too, as well as thinking through problems and making use of flow-charts or diagrams to support the thought process. We encourage discussions and team-work, as these skills build confidence and this is key to being able to deal with daily Maths problems.
There will be 3 hours of Maths lessons per week.
Edexcel Functional Skills assessments are offered at Entry Levels 1, 2 ,3 and L1 The assessments at Entry Level are completed in class and the Level 1 assessments are formal examinations which you can complete when you feel ready to
You will be placed on a Maths course which is suitable for your level, this will be based on previous Maths qualifications and assessments.
Once a student has progressed through the Functional Skills Qualifications they may move on to a Free Standing Maths Qualification as part of a progression route to the GCSE Foundation course. Your qualification will be recognised by employers and other colleges when you are applying for work or study.
