At the beginning of the course you will complete a diagnostic assessment to identify your starting point level and areas of English you find difficult with to enable you to make progress. The English delivery is contextualised and linked to the main subject short course you are completing. You will focus on letter writing, sending emails, reading and understanding different texts and taking part in small group discussions. You will become more confident in communicating with others in a range of everyday situations. You will be encouraged to read a book every week which will help you to improve your vocabulary and general knowledge.
You will take the Edexcel Functional Skills English assessment at Level 1 during the year. This qualification has three parts. In the Reading exam you will read two texts and answer questions about language, layout and purpose. In the Writing exam you will produce two pieces of writing, for example; a letter, an email, an article. There are two Speaking and Listening assessments: a formal group discussion and an informal group discussion.
You will be placed on an English qualification which is suitable for your level.
