Overview

Details

This course provides students with an insight into many aspects of health and social care. Topics covered are working in health, social care and childcare, communication skills, health and safety practices, and exploring HSC environments. The course focuses on working in childcare. Altogether six units will be studied and this will provide students with the knowledge and skills to continue to Level 3.

How will it be delivered?

The course is taught by members of staff with specialist knowledge and experience in their own teaching areas.

Students are encouraged to be responsible for their own development, through assignments, external visits and self-assessment.

Four out of the six units will be coursework based. Students are advised to complete drafts as early as possible so they can gain feedback from their teachers and improve their work. Students will also sit two external assessments lasting 45 minutes each. One exam will be computer based and the other, a written paper.

This course is equivalent to two GCSEs with a Pass being the same as a ‘C’ grade. Through hard work students can also gain a Merit, Distinction or Distinction* grade; these are the equivalent to ‘B’ grades ‘A’ grades and ‘A*’ grades respectively.

Entry requirements

To access the Level 2 pathway students will need a majority of Grade 3's at GCSE.

Students will need to have a Grade 3 in either English or Maths, good social skills and to be able to communicate with a wide variety of people. It is also for students who wish to learn about the health and social care services and appropriate practices that should be carried out.

Your next steps...

This is a highly successful course with the vast majority of students deciding to progress further on courses in this Sixth Form.

Health and Social Care is particularly useful for those who wish to progress from a level 2 qualification to a level 3 qualification, or who wish to work in the Health Service or Caring industry e.g. with the elderly, pre-school, physically disadvantaged, those with a learning disability etc. (However, it does not, by itself, provide a qualification offering direct entry into nursing).

Many students in the Sixth Form however move on to the Level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care which is also offered by the Social Science Faculty.
