• Component 1, Performing: A public performance of 10-12 minutes.

• Component 2, Composing: A free composition of about 4-5 minutes in length, and a set of two harmony exercises in the style of JS Bach.

• Component 3, Appraising: A written exam assessing knowledge and understanding of musical elements, context and language from six areas of study, covered in lessons over the length of the course.


Performing: personal practice and lessons with an instrumental/vocal teacher

Composition: Class lessons and 1:1 tutorials

Appraising: Class lessons, regular assessments and homework

How will it be delivered?

• Component 1, Performing: Recital recorded and sent for external assessment at the end of year 13.

• Component 2, Composing: Compositions are recorded and sent for external assessment at the end of year 13.

• Component 3, Appraising: 2 hour written exam at the end of year 13.

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade 5 in Music. If you have not studied this subject at GCSE level you will need Grade 5 in an instrument.

All universities and degree- awarding institutions recognise A Level Music as a valid and highly desirable qualification. The transferable skills gained through the course are valuable in a wide range of careers; you will develop a problem solving approach to your learning, and a capacity to deal with challenging situations as well as building a sound knowledge and understanding of the subject that will be relevant to a whole range of studies.

Many of our students have progressed to study music, music production, or performance related subjects at university, or have used their musical qualifications to enhance their employability in a wide range of careers.
