Overview

What is chemistry?

A Level Chemistry will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of chemistry. It covers the key concepts of chemistry and practical skills are integrated throughout the course. This combination of academic challenge and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A Level Chemistry highly appealing. You will learn about chemistry in a range of different contexts and the impact it has on industry and many aspects of everyday life. You will learn to investigate and solve problems in a range of contexts.

Course Overview

Chemistry A is split into six modules:

Modules 1 to 6, combined with the Practical Endorsement, constitute the full A Level. The modules can be summarised as:

Module 1: Development of practical skills – this module underpins the whole of the specification, and covers the practical skills that students should develop throughout the course. The practical skills in this module can be assessed within written examinations and (for A Level only) within the Practical Endorsement.
Module 2: Foundations in chemistry covering concepts required throughout the remaining modules.
Module 3: Periodic Table and Energy
Module 4: Core Organic Chemistry
Module 5: Physical Chemistry and Transition Metals
Module 6: Organic Chemistry and Analysis

How will it be delivered?

Assessment at A Level

Paper 1 assesses the content from Modules 1, 2, 3 and 5
Paper 2 assesses the content from Modules 1, 2, 4 and 6
Paper 3 assesses the content from Modules 1 to 6.

Assessment of practical work

There is no coursework. Practical skills are assessed in the written papers. There will also be a set of core-practical activities that students will complete. The students’ performance in this will be reported separately, with an endorsement to those who pass.

Entry requirements

At least a grade 6 in Chemistry or grades 6/6 in Double Science plus a minimum grade 5 in Mathematics

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 in Chemistry, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry.
