Overview

This highly creative and successful course aims to give you the confidence and skills to explore a diverse range of themes and to develop a questioning and analytical attitude.

There is a strong emphasis on the teaching of creative, contemporary drawing skills and developing underpinning research skills. You are encouraged to explore and experiment through a wide range of Art and Design media. Observational drawing and recording skills are very important. You will study a range of contemporary artists to help inform your ideas. Your practical design work will be recorded in a sketch book and this will lead to final paintings, illustrations and artefacts.   

With pathways in Graphic Communication and Textile Design, our teaching team is on hand to support you with your specialism and give you experience of a wide range of artistic disciplines.

Gateway is known for an outstanding end of year exhibition which is open to the public. Your work will feature in this.

Details

There are a range of extension opportunities for students studying all courses in Art and Design. Previous visits have included London Galleries, Craft Galleries and Clothes Show Live. We also benefit from a programme of visiting speakers and professional workshops carried out by professionals who work in the Art and Design Industry. Each year students participate in creating for the Gateway Fashion Show and display individual Art & Design work in the Summer End of Year Exhibition (June). 

How will it be delivered?

Portfolio of practical research work and outcomes, illustrated reflective essay. Externally set practical research and outcome.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade A* -C/9-4 to include English Language and Art. A portfolio of work would need to be presented at interview.

A £50 studio fee includes the provision of a basic kit bag.
