Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to Positive Steps @16https://ps16.co.uk/

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and Voiceover)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible, the following list describes which issues you might encounter.

For people using keyboard or voice input:

  • The following cannot be accessed via a keyboard:
  • The additional event information in the calendar view on the events page;
  • Screen readers won’t announce when a link on the website will open in a new window.

For people using screenreaders:

  • Some items on the website, which should be treated as a list, aren’t inside a list so screen reader will not announce them as a list or as having a relationship with one another.
  • Presentational code is embedded within parts the website which may prevent you from customising the presentation.
  • The calendar view on the Events listing page is not accessible with a screen reader. The same information can be found in the list view and should be used as an alternative.
  • Some Form error messages won’t be announced by a screen reader.
  • The website page titles aren’t always reflective of what is on the page. You will have to announce the first heading on the page in order to understand the context of the page.
  • If a form field has a character limit a screen reader will not announce when you are about to reach the limit.
  • Some of the pages have structural errors which might affect the way the pages are read to assistive technologies.

For people with cognitive issues:

  • The captions provided for YouTube videos on the Course pages and the Information & Inspiration sub-pages may be incorrect.
  • There is no audio description track or text transcript for the YouTube videos on the Course pages and the Information & Inspiration sub-pages.
  • The website does not provide a site map.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Positive Steps @16 is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Some images are not accurately described by alternative text or are missing alternative text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).
  • Some images that serve a decorate purpose do not have a null value so that assistive technologies can ignore the image. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).
  • There is some presentational code (CSS) embedded within structural code (HTML) on the page. This may prevent some people with mild visual impairments and those with cognitive impairments from reading the page easily as they will not be able to customise the presentation of the page by using their own style sheets (CSS). This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships).
  • Lists are not used to group some contents on the website, which doesn’t allow screen readers to accurately describe them. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships).
  • Form error messages aren’t automatically announced by assistive technologies because they are not associated to their corresponding form element. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships).
  • All page titles, with the exception of the homepage, do not accurately describe the content on the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.2 (page titled).
  • The website does not provide a site map. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.5 (multiple ways).
  • Some pages have parsing errors which could change the way the pages are read to assistive technologies. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (parsing).
  • Users are not notified when reaching a character limit for form fields with a character count in the Review and check application pages. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).

These are planned to be resolved by the end of the year.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

The following list refers to the content on pages provided by or managed by third parties:

  • YouTube videos on the Course pages and Information & Inspiration sub-pages have automatically generated captions which were partially incorrect. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.2 (captions (pre-recorded)).
  • YouTube videos on the Course pages and Information & Inspiration sub-pages do not have an audio track or a transcript. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.2 & 1.2.5 (captions & audio).
  • Some of the images on the Course pages contain images of text which cannot be announced by screen readers. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.5 (images of text).
  • The Events listing calendar is made by a third party and is used to show an alternative view of events listings. The calendar is a HTML table and is not marked up correctly and therefore cannot be understood by people using assistive technologies. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships).
  • Some pages have parsing errors which could change the way the pages are read to assistive technologies. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (parsing).

First Media Solutions will encourage the 3rd party content providers to meet the accessibility guidelines, but it is not under our direct control. We are also looking for alternative solutions for the events calendar and social wall.
